Day 3 in Scotland filled us with Sunday worship, bangers and mash American Sumo style, and a record 5th Scotland chapel choir concert for our beloved friends of Crown Church, Inverness!
Today’s disclaimer: one advantage of staying in this particular Scotland Youth Hostel is that the WiFi connection is spotty at best… UPSIDE -- our youth are talking, playing cards, and interacting with each other and not staring at their own hand 6 inches in front of their face J… DOWNSIDE – no blogpost ability at current location so will have to see if a post can be done on the morrow [late breaking edit – if you’re reading this, then WiFi made a fleeting appearance]--- maybe at that fish n chips place we passed on the way in.
Oh, remember yesterday’s reference to a short night’s sleep? Our youth continue to amaze with their ability to rise to any occasion. Today that meant a 5 am wake up, 5:30 breakfast, and 6 am coach (that’s bus to us ‘mericans) from Perth to Inverness for Sunday morning worship. We arrived at Inverness with some time for us to take a short walk from Crown Church to a corner market at which we cleared half their stock in about 7 minutes flat – they appeared pleased to have our business!
11 am worship led by Rev. Peter Donald and a full house of Crown Church regulars enlivened our crew a wee bit (ok, in truth, a very wee bit). Once again, however, the SPC Youth Chapel choir stood to raise their voices 3 times during morning worship to praise and honor the One for whom we live, move, snooze, and have our being.
Yes, Crown Church has hosted the SPC Chapel Youth Choir each and every Scotland trip since the initial one in 2000. Several church members were genuinely pleased to share this fact and we were abundantly honored to receive their hospitality once again. This time our treat included a barbeque lunch (not the pulled pork kind but the burgers, sausage dogs, and prawn cocktail crisps kind) followed by a post prandial promenade on the grounds marked by Frisbee, soccer, er, football, and yes, bangers and mash American Sumo style!
Apparently, the physical activity provided a needed injection of energy and charisma for our 6 pm Crown Church concert. The choir’s enthusiasm tonight would have been special under any circumstance yet given the last 72 hours the real treat just might have been the vigorous standing ovation from our record setting Inverness friends. As noted by one particular fellow, “it’s a bit rare for us to stand with such ovation given how we take the limit.”
